There's a Victorian dance called the Entwine. It's danced with a long sash and is a lot like an open waltz. The lady and the gentleman take dance position, each holding the end of the sash, and the gentleman tries to "catch" the lady around the wrists in a series of turns and promenades and twists. The lady ducks and spins. If she eludes capture within three minutes' time, she wins! It's a really fun and competitive dance.
Ok. I made that up. I made it all up. But there is a reason for this post!
I don't talk much about my story work, but this is pretty exciting. Some of you may know that these past few years I've been working on a big writing project--a YA (young adult) Victorian re-telling of the Twelve Dancing Princesses. WELL, a few months ago it was accepted by Greenwillow books and is going to be published! I feel very lucky for the talented story people who've helped me to really improve it and make it shine, including my agent and editor, who have showed a lot of faith in me. And, especially, Lisa Hale.
A quick summary: When their mother dies, Azalea and her eleven younger sisters are thrust into Mourning, which means they have to wear black clothes, are not allowed to leave the Palace, and worst of all, no dancing. One night, Azalea finds a magic passage in the fireplace of their room. It leads to a magical dancing pavilion, tended by a mysterious (& very handsome) gentleman named Keeper. The girls are delighted when he invites them to dance there every night. But Keeper isn't all he seems...
The title is "Entwined" and it will hit the shelves early next year! Super exciting.

ReplyDeleteI really hope that dance is in there now that you've mentioned it (and I think it sounds so cool. I wish it were real).
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to it.

Wow, thanks so much everyone! I will try to use my powers for good. Um. Mostly good. Ok I'm going to take over the world with them.
ReplyDeleteMy 17-year old sister, Lilli, came up with the title. She says I owe her royalties.
@Brent - EGADS!!!!
@Lilli~
ReplyDeleteOne word title out of a 91,000+ word novel = .0010989% of the royalties or ten cents for every hundred dollars...
some how i missed this post... super excited for you!!!! I'll buy it... can't wait to read it!
ReplyDeleteI read your book, its amazing. I've been practicing the souls curtsy..its tough. Amazing book, thank you for writing it!
ReplyDeleteYour book is the most enchanting novel I have read in a LONG time! Beautifully-written and absolutely engrossing! I practiced the Soul's Curtsy -- I couldn't resist!
ReplyDeleteI wish there was a guide to how to dance the Entwine, along with all of the other dances. I would love to learn them all and dance them.
Entwined has given me a refreshed inspiration to go back to my own writing! Thank you, so much!
You are a brilliant woman! Thank you for sharing your creativity with the world.
Sincerely, Jeanette S.
I just finished reading Entwined yesterday, and I decided to google it to see if it was a dance when I found this page!!! I'm a little disappointed that it wasn't a real dance, but I'm excited to hear that you made it up yourself.
ReplyDeleteYour characters are amazing!! I really like the three eldest, I can relate to all three.I like Lord Teddie too. I think it's kind of funny when they make a list for Azalea, for her perfect man, but it turns out that most of the ones listed sounded like Teddie, so in a way it was Bramble's list.
I can go on forever on how I love this book, but I guess I'm kind of spoiling it for the people who haven't read it yet. =)
Is your book called Entwined? I'm 12 and I just finished reading it. It is absolutely AMAZING! By far the BEST book i have ever read. There is absolutely no words that I can say that can decribe how much I liked this book. It was just incredible!!!

ReplyDeleteThank you for writing this book, I love it so much. After reading for the 7th time, I decided to google "The Entwine" to see if it was an actual dance. Unfortunately, no, it's not, but I wish it was! Also, I've been trying to practice the Soul's Curtsy, but not in front of anyone else, because it's only for your husband or a king. I LOVE this book SO much!
ReplyDelete@Anony 3:58 - My goodness, thank you for the kind words! #^_^# I've tried to practice the Soul's Curtsy too...I usually end up on my face. ;)
