I really like the game Candyland. Here are some redesigns I'm doing for a project:

Lord Licorice
Cool, huh? I love the tagline, "A Sweet Little Game for Sweet Little Folks."
^^I really like that one. Tim Burton seems a natural fit for this, doesn't he. Still, it's Kevin Lima (Tarzan and Enchanted) that Universal is having direct it. I'm intrigued to see how it turns out.

I tried to make him less girly, I swear. He may have to go through another round.
You might be able to tell these were based on the 1985 version, which is what I grew up with. The game's changed since then!

Except she's not Queen Frostine anymore, she's Princess Frostine. I can imagine younger girls love her pink dress. I'm kinda fond of the old version though.

Mr. Mint horrifies me to no end. What does he want? Why does he dress this way?? What is he searching for with those piercing, inky eyes?

ReplyDeleteMary Poppins is one of my favorites as well. Wish I had time to do your speed painting idea...sounds like so much fun, but I'm focusing heavily on animation at the moment. The things Nate is doing on the blog are pretty cool. If you ever want to stop by and give us pointers. That would be great.

ReplyDelete@Megan - I think she was demoted to princess b/c "princess" is more appealing to little girls than "queen." Princess does not rhyme with "Frostine", though...which is a cryin shame.
Oh, I used to love Candyland until the boy made me play it with him like ten times a day for a few months earlier this year. Still getting over the Candyland burnout. But I'm with you about the old Frostine.

ReplyDeleteFrostine's not the only demotion, though! Lolly's no longer a princess at all. Plus, does Princess Frostine look really old to anyone else? In the eighties one the white hair looks awesome, like the albino girl in The Last Unicorn (tell me you've seen that movie!), but in the new version Frostine's hair looks gray. A gray-haired princess is sort of odd; just sayin'.

I fondly remember this game! I used to play it all the time when I was a kid. I can't believe they changed it so much. I like the original designs so much better than the new ones they came up with for Frostine and Lord Licorice.

Happy to see that the 1947 version was forward thinking in its candy choices. Also glad to see there wasn't stuff like the Hard Tack Savannah or Mince Meat Pie Plateau, although I guess "Crooked Old Peanut Brittle House" gets pretty close to the "nostalgic" feel of some of the world's first junk foods.
