Yes to the Dress {Again}

Hi.  My name is Heather Dixon, and I'm an addict.

I like to watch "Say Yes to the Dress."

It's a terrible addiction.  There are so many other good, wonderful things I could be addicted to.

Like mathematics.  Or oatmeal.  Or cocaine.

I don't know why I keep watching it.  It's a terrible show.

All the dresses look the same.

A lot of the brides are absolute monsters.

So why do I keep watching it?  Why???*

*probably because it's free on Youtube.

Here's what's really dumb about the whole thing:  I already have a wedding dress.

No, I really do.

I was going to be married earlier this year.

I'd wanted a wedding dress like Grace Kelly's:

Isn't she so pretty??

Unfortunately, wedding dresses that looked like they stepped out of a 50's musical haven't been in style since...well...the 50's.

So when I went shopping, there were a whoooole lot of sleeveless dresses....

But not a lot of Grace Kelly dresses :(

I found one that almost came close.

It cost $5500.

{I didn't buy it.}

I'd pretty much given up on my 50's wedding dress fantasies, when on the fly I decided to visit a tiny little dress shop tucked away behind a storage facility.

It was so tiny they didn't have enough dressing rooms {and to be fair...I did show up without an appointment.}  But they fit me in anyway...and they fit me in a broom closet!

That's where I found It.

Not the mop bucket...The Grace Kelly dress!

It was sooooooooo pretty.

{And way cheaper than $5500.  Which made it even prettier!}

The lady who runs the shop told me her secret--she orders plus-size dresses in smaller sizes {she says a lot of dress shops don't know you can do that} and so that's how she finds dresses with sleeves.

Here's a picture of It:

I know right!  It's even prettier when it's not a badly-drawn grayscale cartoon!

That was then.

This is now.

A month before the wedding, my fiance broke up with me.

But enough about him.  {Though I really enjoyed drawing that last frame.}

All this to say, I still have a wedding dress.  And even worse, it still had to finish being altered.  Which meant I had to re-live everything every time I put it back on...

Thankfully, the lady who fitted me gave me the best advice I'd ever gotten:

And so, with the money I'd saved from returning his wedding band and other wedding expenses, I bought a 22" inch cintiq...which I am using right now.

Some people would say that's definitely a trade up.  {Oh, but not me!}

The dress currently hangs in my closet.  It's too perty to sell :)

I bring this all up because the other day, I was {yet again} watching the show.

A bride came in with her grandma and her entourage.

The grandma had very definite ideas of what she wanted.

The bride had very definite ideas of what she didn't want.

To make her grandma happy though, {because grandma was paying for the dress}, she decided to try on a dress with sleeves.

She hated it.

I had to stop drawing at this point, because I was like:

And it did.  It was absolutely gorgeous.

But the bride didn't just hate it.  She really hated it.

What made this all totally worse is that this was "Yes to the Dress: Atlanta", which meant that all these terrible things were spoken in a Southern accent!  Something as adorable as a Southern accent should never be used to say such horrible things.  There oughtta be a law!*

*I really mean that, too.  My plans for Can-merica are moving along and when I'm dictator, the second law* I'll put into motion is that people with Southern accents can only say food-y things.  Like, "Honey," "Sweetie-Pie," "Possum with a sweet potatah," etc.  I have Plans.

**The first law is that every Mountie has to learn how to tango.

The bride comes out to the dressing room floor...

And her entourage is like:

Oh yes, that dress with sleeves surrrre is funny.

Grandma just sits there.

It IS pretty!!

It was. :(

The bride goes back to the dressing room and tries on a dress that looks like every other dress in the store. :( :(

They love it.

Long pause.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

I haven't stopped drawing since the episode ended.

This blog isn't very famous.

There are about 4 people who visit it a day.

One is my mom.  {Thanks, mom!}

But there are 3 others.  One of them could be that Southern grandma.

This blog post is for her.

Southern Grandma, you were RIGHT.  That dress with sleeves was beautiful.  Don't you listen to them.  You gotta go with your GUT and your gut was RIGHT.

The End.

  1. I LOVE this blog. I also sincerely hope you hit that jerk in the face with a meatball and that he still carries the scar today.

    Sincerely,
A 24 year old Southern gal (Sorry, I'm not the granny)

  2. Well boo to your ex-fiance. He just doesn't know what he missed out on. Although because of him we did get that lovely frame. xD
Your blog is the greatest, and I look forward to each of your posts. Your stories are always so great. ^_^
And I agree with you & the old southern grandma. "Old" things like wedding dresses are best. =)

  3. Heather your blog ROCKS I love reading all your stories. And for the record, I think the Grace Kelly dress was way prettier. That is what I want for my wedding someday! You are awesome!

  4. That Gracce Kelly dress is gorgeous. And sleeves are gorgeous.

When one of my non-LDS friends got married, she had a lacy dress with an open back. I thought it was very pretty on her, she looked good in it, but my atheist friend didn't like it. She thought it was too immodest. I found that very interesting. Granted, maybe it was because our friend was too innocent to wear that dress in her mind, but still. Modesty is beautiful, and lots of people know it.

  5. I have been a silent reader. NOW I WILL SPEAK: GURL you are right!
Your dress is gorgeous and they don't know anything, those cookie cutter brides. Also it's comforting to know that more people are watching silly thing on youtube while painting or animating (I watch dating sims 'Let's play's).
Congrats on buying a cintiq. so much better then a wedding.

  6. Your dress is the kind of dress I was looking for, but I was stressed and hated trying on dresses, so I settled for less. I'm sorry about twit face hurting you! I hope that rang left a big gaping gash on his face!

P.S. This is my favourite blog!

  7. It surprises me that so many people don't recognize a true treasure when they see it. This applies to twit face as well. I adore this post Heather!

  8. I have also always been a silent reader. NO LONGER. You are awesome. This blog is awesome. I insist that my family members read it on a regular basis. And the sleeved dress was the best one. Southern grandma! You have been vindicated!

  9. At the risk of being a creeper, I'm a random reader who found your blog after reading (and loving) "Entwined" and I love your blog! Boo to your ex-fiancé, and all the haters--the Grace Kelly dress is gorgeous and you're amazing! Enjoy the cintiq! :)

  10. Heather, I really hope you'll get a Grace Kelly wedding.

  11. I love your Grace Kelly wedding dress. It's beautiful. And I'm sorry about the pain of your breakup. As sad as a breakup is now, after the wedding is much worse. I hope someday someone who really appreciates you will see you in that dress and be grateful that he has the opportunity to do so.

  12. I love this post, but especially the tangoing Mounties. Can we please make that happen?

  13. I always read your blog, but I'm one of those people who is usually laughing so hard at its cleverness that I feel silly leaving an un-clever comment. :) I started following you here and on Pinterest after reading Entwined, just to make sure I didn't miss any possible new book news, because I loved the first one so much! And I hope this doesn't sound weird, but I feel like I know you a little bit now, so I just want to reach out from cyberspace and say how sorry I am. It probably won't help now, but as a writer, I generally derive a little eventual comfort from remembering that "everything's copy." Someday your pain will make some character's situation that much more authentic.
Lastly, of course you're right about the dress. The problem is most people aren't analyzers, and they follow along with what the media shoves in their faces and actually think truly beautiful things are ugly. (I'm pretty sure this applies to everything from art to politics to wedding dresses.)

  14. Hang in there, Sweetie! You are incredibly talented, clever, an cute!

  15. Just to join in the chorus, I read your blog all the time, as do my girls (the reading ones, anyway). We love your drawings and your stories (especially the ones about your dreams ... and the ones about Harry Potter ... and the ones about Weeping Angels ... okay, especially all of them). My fifteen year old reads your stories and giggles, then shares with her sisters.

Today I especially liked your picture that showed your ring bonking he-who-must-not-be-named (because I don't know his name) in the face. I think it deserves to be printed out and hung on a wall so you can throw other things at it ... I was going to suggest rotten eggs, but then I thought that would make a mess of your wall, so I changed my mind to darts. Darts would be good.

Your dress is lovely, but it's going to look much better on you than it ever would have looked on that other chick because you will be HAPPY in it - both because the dress is beautiful and because you'll be marrying someone who is dedicated to your relationship. So just let her look like everyone else - you keep looking like you.

  16. Did he break up with you in a restaurant? That's so inconsiderate.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Ms. Dixon, I am so sorry that your fiance was such a doofus. He's missing out big time!

Keep smiling and bringing joy to the world through your books and your blog. Your stories always make me smile, and more often then not I will burst out into either full-body laughter or really creepy snort-chuckles that would be sure to alarm any living creature in the room with me.

    Keep being awesome! <3

  18. I love wedding dresses with sleeves! I'm planning on wearing my grandma's old wedding dress someday (sleeves, you know :-) I feel you girl. Awesome post.

  19. Totally LOVE your blog, I think the counting (I check all the time) must be wrong.
Plus you're totally right on the dress! (Pinterest also proves you have great taste.) :))

About your ex fiance: Try to stay positive, better this happens before than after the wedding... (Just imagine that!)
You are gorgeous, funny and talented, anyone who does not see how great you are does not deserve you!

    All the best! <3

  23. I would have been right there with you yelling at the TV (yeah, I'm pretty hooked on the show too). I loathe the sleeveless wedding dress trend.

By the way, that infamous frame you enjoyed drawing so much... LOVED IT! (I probably loved it a little too much.) You definitely traded up getting that shiny new Cintiq! Rock that puppy! I'm piddling along on my little Cintiq so I kind of drooled when I read your post... gotta wipe off my keyboard now.

  24. I'm not one of the "four" folks who visits your blog, but since I read Entwined, I look forward to getting your posts in my inbox. (Which also explains why you probably haven't noticed me.) I am the 25th person to comment, which I think means you have a lot of people who care about you, your wedding dress, and either watch "Say Yes To The Dress" or are about to check it out... Thank you for another wonderful post. I am so sorry to hear about your fiance. As for sleeves on wedding dresses...mine has sleeves too. :) And now I'm off to YouTube to find out what this show is all about...

  25. I love your dress so much! I would wear it to my wedding if I could find one that looked like it. I don't really like the sleeveless dress ...

  26. Considering this blog is #4 on my Chrome tab suggestions, I'm going to go out on a limb and say I'm one of those three. What can I say, you're entertaining. xD (Also the Hogwarts Lego dream is becoming a daily pick-me-up)

I guess I should comment more. If I could, I'd totally send you a gift basket or something after all that. D: Probably one for southern gramma too.

(I was the nosy chick on your Nutcracker pinterest board, lol)

  27. You will definitely trade up! Thanks for all your amazing posts, and sorry I haven't taken the time to send my appreciation before. You are great.

  28. More than four people! <3

I've only seen one episode, and it's because one of my favorite Broadway actresses, Sutton Foster, was recently on the show.

I loved your rendition, though!!! I hope you get to eventually wear your beauty!!!

  29. I've never commented before, but I thought I'd chime in to lend my support. I'm sorry to hear what you've gone through, but I have every hope that you'll come out all the better for it in the end. Like the seamstress said, you'll trade up.

I'm a huge fan of your work and reading your blog always makes me smile. Thanks for all that you do. I wish you all the best!! :)

  30. I must also say how much I love your blog and have been reading for years. I am always looking for more funny blogs like yours but can't find any. Yours is the funnest blog out there. And when anyone needs a pick me up--I send them to your blog.

Tell us the name of the "say yes to the dress" episode so I can find it on Youtube. My curiosity is killing me!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Holy mother of pearl! I didn't expect so many kind words! {I mostly mentioned the 4 visitors to be funny--I don't check stats much but I do know my mom always reads it!} {Thanks Mom!} And I totally understand not commenting--I'm not a big commentor myself! The good news here is: the chances the Southern Gramma is reading this are so much higher than I originally thought! Lolol ^_^

In terms of my ex-fiance, I'm glad we didn't get married. There were a lot of red flags that I was willfully ignoring. {In truth I've been a lot angrier with me than him for letting myself get so bamboozled.} I have learned quite a bit from the experience, though, and I'm very grateful for that! To {sort of} quote Babes in Toyland: "This experience has made me wiser! I shan't give my heart to a miser."

The dress is absolutely beautiful. Hopefully since it's not too trendy it won't ever be out of style ^_^

Answers to questions {let me know if I'm missing any!}:

He did break it up in a restaurant, but fortunately {I think...} it was across the street from a big hospital, so the waiter thought I was crying because my grandma had died. Lol.

I don't remember was SYTTD:A episode it was...I've seen waaaaaaay too many! I'll have to see if I can find it again ^_^

  32. I just had to tell you how much I love your funny and beautiful blog. I share your love of art, writing, classic musicals, and classy and different wedding dresses. My wedding dress was inexpensive, sleeved, and gorgeous, so I'm totally with you on that one. I'm glad you're over twit face and I love that frame and southern grandma. I think you did trade up. I'm sending mental high fives your way.

  34. HI! I looooo-ooove your blog. I may not visit it every post but I (and my teenage daughter) avidly read your posts when they arrive in my inbox. :)

I adored your book, Entwined, and your writing (and your drawings!!). I think I'd cheerfully read anything you write.

Please, please, please write another book. :)

All the very best as you write,

  36. I have kept this tab open for days to come back and write and, lo and behold, everyone else has too. I long wondered since the Temple Square post what has happened. I'm glad time and space have made things better and I'm glad all those who love you silently are coming out of the walls.

Enjoy the Cintiq. It was definitely the better choice. In a restaurant? I mean, come on.

The one who dumped you will definitely pale when he is showed up by your future spouse. Speaking from experience . . . painful, but way worth it!!

Love you. Thanks for bringing all of us so much joy!!!

  37. As, like...the only dude to comment on your Blog, I really appreciate the artwork that goes along with the story. But all those readers who miss out on you telling these stories in real life, you are quite the orator! I think a podcast is in your future if you ever find time between all the jobs and writing and house buying that you do...

Miss seeing you around, and possibly even talking superheroes now that you are a quasi expert on the matter...at least the Disney incarnations of the superheroes!

  39. Just wanted to throw out yet another comment to say I totally agree with you and the southern grandma! That dress looked beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree that your dress is absolutely gorgeous, and being unique just adds to its charm. I am rather surprised about the shortage of long sleeved dresses though, I would have thought that there would be quite a few seeing as Kate's dress had long sleeves in the Royal Wedding

    ReplyDelete
  41. I love this blog. It always makes me smile.

Southern 22-year-old here. That dress is fabulous. They need more sleeves on these dresses.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I would love to enlarge the picture of your ex-fiance and use it as an archery target. It'd look so nice next to my Justin Bieber and Hitler targets. No one messes with my favorite author and get away with it!!!

P.S. Your dress is so PRETTY! The Grace Kelly dress is lovely. I LOVE lacy sleeves. Lace anything really, but those lace sleeves are so wonderful.

  43. So I am one of those people that never comments but loves the blog. First off, the Grace Kelly dress is beautiful, timeless, and will never go out of style. Secondly, I LOVE this blog!!! I actually found your blog by circumstance as I was looking up authors for a project. I am so glad I did. Not only has the blog managed to make me look insane as I spontaneously burst out laughing in the train but also has been a great pick me up in the days full of boredom, sadness, or whatever else. Thank you for that 😊

  44. My wife's wedding dress had sleeves and it's the most beautiful dress I've ever seen (the person wearing it may have influenced my opinion). It was sophisticated and timeless (like yours). If that lady from that show, which I've never watched, lived in the 80s I'm sure she would have hated any dress that didn't have poofy sleeves visible from space. I say, skip the trendy in favor of the classic, your kids will make fun of you less. :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Three things:

Sleeves, FTW! I was going to chime in on how I had sleeves on my dress and all that, but the hubs beat me to it. And he's totally right, classic is the way to go. I got my wedding dress 11 years ago (first one I tried on, too) and I still love it. That's saying something.

Second random thing: I'm only three degrees of separation from Grace Kelly. I have a friend (okay, more like Kevin's friend, so maybe it's 3 1/2 degrees of separation) who knows the lady who did Grace Kelly's hair for her wedding. For reals. And then that lady did Kevin's friend's hair for her wedding. Does any of this make sense? Probably not. But yeah...

And thirdly, I'm really, really glad we're friends. I could be easily convinced that we were separated at birth. Though I'm not even close to as funny as you are.

  46. I'm another long time reader and first time commenter :) I love your blog, it's hilarious! I'm always checking back for new posts and giggling over them.

I absolutely love your Grace Kelly dress, it's so much more classy than the dress that girl picked. She clearly has no idea! lol

I'm really sorry to hear about your engagement ending too :(

    ReplyDelete
  47. This post is the best! I just love it to pieces. And I hate how the brides always choose the most ugly, and self-disrespecting dresses! I remember the ONE episode where the bride chose a modest dress- it was with the mom from 19 kids and counting, and her dress was beautiful :) Thanks for always giving me a smile from looking at your blog!

  48. Hi Heather!

I, just like every other loyal fan and reader in here, would just like to say that you are amazing and hilarious, and your posts always make my day! That crummy man who broke up with you is a dumb, and you deserve so much better!
Your so strong to be so open about this, its very inspiring. Have a great day, and you're right, the sleeved dress is gorgeous!

    Much love,

  49. Oh, Heather!

I've loved you and your book and you blog for many years. And I take advantage of your awesomeness when the library needs your amazing talents. I'm so sorry you had to go through a break up. I'm sure you've heard all kinds of consoling and/or mutual vengeful remarks. So which ever you're wanting or not wanting at the moment, here it is from me (you can fill in the blanks so it's exactly how you want it to be): ____ _____ _____ ____ _____ _____ _____ ____. Should I admit that I have wanted to go wedding dress shopping just so I can have mine on hand--even though I've never come close to a fiance?

  50. Oh my Heather, I must say I am so amazed by your story telling skills. I was touched by your story, yet you made me laugh through this post even though it's such sad experience. You have real talent. :)

Big hugs! And I wish you a WONDERFUL 2015!!!! :)

  54. OMG! I completely agree with you. My prom is coming up, and usually people wear completely strapless, boobs-popping-out type of dresses, but I just don't get it. Why would you want a strapless dress at a DANCE?? Where you're bouncing around dancing? I want one with cap sleeves or full length sleeves, but those are very hard to find. Maybe I should get a plus-size dress in a small size too.

  58. I used to be a silent reader after reading Entwined (like 2 years ago) and I LOVE this blog. I've just remembered it today though because I had a lot of things going on at the time.
Southern Grandma is right. Sleeveless dresses are so overrated. Nothing beats the charming vintage lace sleeves look imo :-)
Grace Kelly's wedding dress is GORGEOUS. And mind you, I have high standards. None of those cheap looking sweetheart necklines for me.
Fitting Lady is very wise. It's your fiancee's loss, as you seem like a hilarious, marvelous person (from reading this blog).

PS: I found my way here through my eternal love for Entwined and my continuous search for more books like it. Much love!
